For change to be effective, it requires balance – between continuity and novelty, between respect for what already exists and the courage to shape a sustainable future. In this session, we will explore how these two perspectives complement each other, creating a sustainable approach to transformation.
The dominant narrative reduces the future to constant change. Yet trend analysis reveals that change usually grows out of things that are already happening. Instead of chasing the hype of the unknown, we can gain much more by connecting today’s processes into a story of continuation — proactively shaping direction in the liminal space between past and future.
The future is often presented as endless change that we either need to predict or adapt to. Yet working with trends and signals shows something different: change is not random, but the natural outcome of what already exists around us.
When we focus only on the unknown, we lose sight of a key advantage—the ability to connect what we already see into a bigger picture of continuation. Continuation means shaping the future by moving step by step through separation, transition, and integration (ideas from Jitske Kramer), where past and future meet in the “in-between” space. This space may feel unclear, but it gives us room to adjust our course, explore new opportunities, and innovate—while still holding on to a bigger, long-term vision worth pursuing.
